Lack of Commitment

Often considered to be positive and valued behaviour, under certain circumstances commitment can have negative consequences on employee health. This is particularly the case when commitment becomes over-commitment, leading to stress, overwork and presenteeism. Ignored by many, the cost of presenteeism is actually estimated to be twice the cost of absenteeism. It accounts for 13.7 to 24.9 billion euros (source: Midori Consulting, 2016), a cost of low productivity that is covered by the employer. “Healthy” commitment is, however, and important factor for human resources.
Today, companies have various means at their disposal for acting on commitment and promoting healthy employee involvement. For example, they can work on job content, long-term company projects, pay, autonomy or training. To ensure that this type of action is effective, however, employees should also be provided with tools to help them identify their needs and situations in which they feel comfortable, less comfortable or indeed at risk.
